Another good film for metal fans to watch. This film is a follow-up to Metal: A Headbanger's Journey.
In Global Metal, directors Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn set out to discover how the West's most maligned musical genre - heavy metal - has impacted the world's cultures beyond Europe and North America. The film follows metal fan and anthropologist Sam Dunn on a journey through Asia, South America and the Middle East as he explores the underbelly of the world's emerging extreme music scenes; from Indonesian death metal to Chinese black metal to Iranian thrash metal. Global Metal reveals a worldwide community of metalheads who aren't just absorbing metal from the West - they're transforming it - creating a new form of cultural expression in societies dominated by conflict, corruption and mass-consumerism.
As per the previous film by Sam Dunn, this film too features interviews with popular bands like Sepultura to local bands from each country they've visited. They also feature snippets of the local band's performance and shows how the scene is like at each destination. I must say that some of the bands are really impressive and they offer something different from the normal metal I've heard. Bands to look out for are Demonic Resurrection, Krytos, Tang Dynasty, Tengkorak and Siksa Kubur just to name a few.
I heard rumors that people saying that they saw Sam Dunn here in Singapore during the filming for this film. It would be nice if they interview some of the metalheads here so that the world know more about Singapore's metal scene. :) :) Well, I guess the scene here is still growing.
Anyway, I strongly recommend people to watch this film.
